FELA KUTI: The Life and Legacy of the Afrobeat King.

 Fela Anikulapo Kuti, known simply as Fela Kuti, was a Nigerian musician, activist, and revolutionary who left an indelible mark on the world. Born on October 15, 1938, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, Fela was a true pioneer, blending traditional Yoruba music, jazz, and fuji to create the iconic genre of Afrobeat.

His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a prominent feminist and anti-colonial activist, while his father, Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, was a minister and a musician. Fela's talent was evident from a young age, and he began playing the piano at seven. He later studied music at the Trinity College of Music in London. 

 *The Birth of Afrobeat: 

 In the 1960s, Fela returned to Nigeria and formed his band, Koola Lobitos. He began experimenting with traditional Yoruba rhythms, jazz, and fuji, creating the unique sound that would become Afrobeat. His music was characterized by its strong political message, criticizing government corruption, colonialism, and social injustice. 

 *Political Activism and Persecution: 

 Fela's music and message resonated with the Nigerian people, but it also made him a target for government persecution. He was arrested, beaten, and imprisoned numerous times for his outspoken views. In 1977, his mother was thrown from a window by government soldiers, leading to her death. This event sparked Fela's most famous album, "Zombie," which criticized the Nigerian military.

 In the 1970s, Fela established the Kalakuta Republic, a commune and recording studio that became a hub for his music and activism. He continued to produce music and perform until his death on August 2, 1997.
